Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
The World's Greatest Composer

Symphony No. 2 in C Op.61  (1845-6)

Schumann's second symphony is the least frequently played of the four.  It has been described as dull and mediocre.  I disagree. It is not instant music; you have to listen to it many times before it reveals its true power, infused with Schumann's unquiet spirit and influenced by his mental fragility.  The compelling first movement in particular is full of struggle and when played properly not "pretty". I am including two excerpts - the introduction where the tranquil, almost Bach like theme is constantly interrupted by the brass, and an amazing climax about two thirds of the way through. By the final movement, Schumann is in a better frame of mind and the contrast couldn't be greater.

I have tried to include a full performance of each symphony, courtesy of YouTube.  For this symphony, this is the best I can do, but at least they give it a go!.  Link here
Here are excerpts from the 1973 recordings by Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Staatskapelle Dresden. If you want to download the complete symphony, or the entire set, you can do it very cheaply and legally from here
